The paper Mikko Koho, Eero Hyvönen and Aleksi Lehikoinen: Ornithology Based on Linking Bird Observations with Weather Data was selected as the best paper of the Sepublica Workshop at the 11th ESWC 2014 and presented at a special session of the ESWC main track. SeCoers also co-organized the VISLOD tutorial and presented three demos and a poster. All papers can be found at the publications section.

Monday, June 2nd, 2014National Library Deployed the Finto Ontology Service Based on the Ideas Behind ONKI
Wednesday, January 22nd, 2014The ONKI Ontology Service was originally developed and published by SeCo in 2008, and maintaned after this as a national Living Laboratory. During 2013 the National Library of Finland built a permanent, stable, continuously maintained version of the ONKI idea, which has now been released as the Finnish Thesaurus and Ontology Service Finto.
The new brand name Finto can be seen as a tribute to the FinnONTO project during which the ONKI service and its ontologies were developed at SeCo in collaboration with a large consortium of Finnish organizations, including the National Library. The development of Finto has been funded by the Ministry of Education and Culture and the Ministry of Finance.
Methods for Building Semantic Portals: dissertation defense by Osma Suominen
Monday, September 9th, 2013Osma Suominen defended his dissertation “Methods for Building Semantic Portals” on 9 September 2013. The dissertation presents methods used in semantic web application development for creating user-centered search interfaces, performing automatic topic indexing and for assessing and improving the quality of controlled vocabularies. The work included has got two international awards.

Tuesday, October 30th, 2012Morgan & Claypool, Palo Alto, CA published the SeCo textbook “Eero Hyvönen: Publishing and Using Cultural Heritage Linked Data on the Semantic Web” in its new series “Synthesis Lectures on the Semantic Web: Theory and Technology”, edited by Jim Hendler (University of Rochester) and Ying Ding (Indiana University) .

IESD Challenge Prize to EventMAP

National Linked Data Finland Project Starts
Monday, February 20th, 2012A new national project funded by Tekes 22 Finnish companies and public organizations starts in 2012.
The project is lead and research is done by the Semantic Computing Research Group (SeCo) of Aalto University and Univeristy of Helsinki.

Master´s thesis award to SeCo
Tuesday, May 31st, 2011Master’s thesis “Easily Integrable Ontology Services on the Semantic Web” by Jouni Tuominen, a doctoral candidate in SeCo, was awarded an annual master’s thesis award, organized by the Finnish Society for Computer Science. The thesis is based on the research on the ONKI Ontology Service.

World Summit Award (WSA) Mobile 2011 to SeCo
Friday, December 17th, 2010SmartMuseum application, developed in the FP7 SmartMuseum project by SeCo and seven international partners, got the World Summit Award (WSA) Mobile 2011 in category ‘M-turism and Culture’, organized by the United Nations. There were 430 participanting applications in the global final, selected from about 100 national competitions in different countries. The winners were presented in the WSA gala in Abu Dhabi on December 7th, 2010.

Aalto-yliopiston semanttisen webin tutkijat voittivat World Summit Award Mobile 2010 –kilpailun SmartMuseum -järjestelmällä
Aalto-yliopiston ja kuuden muun yliopiston ja tutkimuspartnerin kehittämä SmartMuseum-järjestelmä on voittanut kansainvälisen World Summit Award Mobile 2010 palkinnon. Työ valittiin parhaaksi kategoriassa ”M-turism and Culture” 430 ehdokkaan joukosta, jotka nimitettiin lähes sadan eri valtion osakilpailuissa.
SmartMuseum -järjestelmän ideana on tarjota museossa kävijälle tietoa ja opastusta kokoelmakohteista älykkäästi ja personoidusti paikan päällä. Voittoisan pilottijärjestelmän sisällöt ovat peräisin Firenzen tieteenhistoriallista Galileo museosta ja Maltan taidemuseosta. SmartMuseum-järjestelmän älykkyys perustuu semanttisen webin teknologioihin ja Kulttuurisampo.fi -portaalin haku- ja suosittelujärjestelmiin. Sisällöntuotannossa on hyödynnetty kansallista ontologiakirjastopalvelua.
Suomen osuus tutkimus- ja kehitystyöstä tehtiin Aalto-yliopiston mediatekniikan laitoksen Semanttisen laskennan tutkimusryhmässä, joka oli lokakuussa voittoisa myös Apps4Finland – Doing Good with Open Data -kilpailussa semanttisella DataSuomi-järjestelmällä.
– Molempien palkintojen taustalla on vuodesta 2003 tutkimusryhmässämme johdettu laaja FinnONTO-hanke kansallisen semanttisen webin infrastruktuurin kehittämiseksi maahamme. Sen tutkimustuloksia ja uusia työkaluja voidaan nyt hyödyntää nopeasti ja kehittää edelleen uusissa sovelluksissa, kertoo hankkeen johtaja Eero Hyvönen.
World Summit Award on Yhdistyneiden kansakuntien ja sen Global Alliance for ICT and Development (UN GAID) -järjestön lippulaivahanke, joka järjestetään yhteistyössä UNESCO:n ja UNIDO:n kanssa. Palkinnot jaettiin Abu Dhabissa 6.12. pidetyssä kansainvälisessä WSA Mobile -gaalassa.
